Ten Duinen 1138

The new name of the museum refers to the influential monastic institution in Koksijde. The number 1138 refers to the moment in which the local abbey was taken up in the Order of Citeaux, as an adopted daughter of the Cistercian abbey of Clairvaux.

The museum Ten Duinen 1138 contains two great stories. The main story is the history of the local Cistercian abbey Our Lady of the Dunes and the daily life within a medieval abbey. As an extra, the purpose and production of religious silver from gothic times until today are being interpreted on the second floor, on the basis of the silver collection Maldague de la Héry.

Ten Duinen is an important addition to the existing musea on the West-coast and the ‘Westhoek’. For most of the musea have an explicit folkloristic/traditional character (id the National Fishing Museum , the Bakery Museum , the Cheese Museum , ‘Sleutel en Slot’ (Key and Lock), ‘Bachten de Kupe’) or are associated with the musea of art (PMMK the Museum for Modern Art, the Delvaux Museum , the Foundation Georges Grard). Since 2004, Ten Duinen 1138 has been recognised by the Flemish Community.

With his cultural-historical theme, Ten Duinen 1138 is associated with the great thematic museum from the ‘Westhoek’: ‘In Flanders Fields’ in Ypres . Both musea handle a specific yet universal theme. The First World War as well as the former abbey in Koksijde has had a great influence on the development of the region.

With his specific theme, the history of the local Cistercian Abbey Our Lady of the Dunes, the museum is linked with similar initiatives to promote our inheritance at home and abroad. The site of Fountains in England is known to be very open to the public. The abbey of Orval disposes of an impressive site, like Rievaulx in England and Fontenay in France , as well as a well organised visitors centre. Villers-la-Ville (B), Clairvaux (F), Senanque (F), Citeaux, they all are part of the rich inheritance of the Cistercian.

Within the neighbouring countries, Ten Duinen 1138 is the only museum that brings the monastic story alive through an interactive exhibition. Koksijde does not have the impressive ruins of the places mentioned above, but it compensates with the strongly organised permanent exhibition.

Ten Duinen 1138 contains five big entities:

1. The abbey museum
2. The archaeological site and the park
3. The abbey-farm Ten Bogaerde
4. The South-Abbey Mill
5. The Silver collection
